Carabao at Aniti Point

watercolor

2010

Carabao are commonly seen around Guam. They are a domesticated water buffalo. They are a farm animal used for pulling plows or carts and also haul produce. They can also be found in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Southeast Asia. I spotted this one just north of the village of Umatac.

Under the Sea

watercolor 2010

I just love these sea turtles. I don't see them every time I go scuba diving so it is special when I do. This one was spotted in the Philippine Sea off the coast of Guam.

pink plumeria blossom

soft pastel
12 x 16
I have been looking at these beautiful pink plumeria blossoms on this tree in my back yard for almost a year now. I thought it was time to finally paint some of them. I did this painting with soft pastels. Yet, now I feel the urge to paint more of these blossoms in watercolor to see how that goes.

pink bougainvillea

watercolor 11x14
2010
Bougainvillea grows all around Guam. While out for a walk, I saw this pink bougainvillea growing over a gate and it caught my eye. I have more photos of this flower and may paint a close up of it again at some point.

Inarajan Bay

watercolor 8x10
This is one of the natural salt water pools found at Inarajan. These pools are great for swimming or to just sit by and enjoy the view.

Blue Sea Star

watercolor 8x10
You almost always see a blue sea star while at a beach or scuba diving on Guam. They are found in the Indian and Pacific Ocean near sunny reefs. I think their bright blue color is stunning. They are also called Blue Starfish.

progress on a new painting

Here is another look at the progress on this painting. It still needs more shadows in the water and under the figures. I will need to add some more contrast around the starfish and female figure to place more focus there. I may also darken the sand along the shore above them. This photo of the painting is quite dark as it was a rainy day. The next post will be the final version of this painting.

I have started a new painting. Still taped to the easel, this is the progress so far. The image is of a little girl and a little boy standing in ankle deep water at the beach. The girl squats down to pick up a blue starfish. The little boy looks on with interest. There won't be much going on in the background. It is all about the children in the foreground and their fascination with discovery. The little girl happens to be my daughter. The boy is a momentary friend she played with at the beach that afternoon.

I have done the underpainting of the children and starfish. Another layer of paint will be added to the figures after I paint the water with reflections and ripples in it. I still need to add the sand and rocks that can be seen through the water. Their shadows will be the last final touch.
